Strathendrick Curling Club News 2010AGM 2010The 164th AGM was held on Thursday 15 April 2010 at the Reception Suite of Glengoyne Distillery. Drinks were served from 7.30 p.m. after which the meeting and prizegiving took place, followed by tea, coffee and shortbread. Fiona Glass has replaced Marshall Falconer as Province Match Secretary. The results of the main competitions can be found at Archive. Both the main Club and the Ladies Section had awards for the Curler of the Year which went to Norman Robertson and Rita Barth respectively. Marshall Falconer reported on the Club's results in the Province competitions. The Club had a very successful year achieving the double of the Robert Paterson Shield and the Forest Hills League and also winning the Province Medal. The detailed results of these competitions can be found on the Province Website at Province Archive. A note for your diary is that the next Balyarrow Trophy has been scheduled for 30 October 2011 at Murrayfield. The subscription for the year has remained at £23. The subscription for non-mother club members remains at £6. Ladies British OpenKim McLaren of Forest Hills Trossachs was a member of the winning team in the Ladies British Open at The Peak. She is the daughter of Jane McLaren of Forest Hills, who many you will know from the bank in Balfron, and the grandaughter of our own John Phillips. The Peak KnockoutA team from Strathendrick reached the final of The Peak Knockout this season. Ballikinrain CupThe annual match against Balfron and Fintry Curling Clubs took place on 5 February. It resulted in Strathendrick retaining the Cup with a good win and a peeled game. Province pointsA number of members of the Club took part in the Province points competition at Braehead on 24 January 2010. Six disciplines were played. The Club did not do as well as last year with Donnie MacDonald tied for third place on 27 points and Maurice Rennie in seventh place on 24 points. The Club came third on the best two scores with 51 points. Ladies Section Friendly MatchesThe Ladies have played two friendly matches in January with two teams in each match. They had a comfortable win against the Club 90 ladies but the result of the match against the Old Fellows is probably best forgotten. Outdoor Curling on Drumore Pond
Improvement work at Drumore Pond in December (see below) resulted in sufficient water to allow curling in the cold period in December 2009 and January 2010. The Club had several days curling on the outdoor ice culminating in a challenge from Balfron to a match on 10 January. This was the first time the weather had allowed the pond to be used since 1993 and the first inter-club match for considerably longer. To see more pictures of outdoor curling at Drumore in December 2009 and January 2010 follow this link. District MedalStrathendrick competed in the District Medal against Falkirk CC on 4 January 2010. We had a good win of 8 shots to 3 and have now received our medal from RCCC. Improvements at Drumore Pond
Drumore Pond has suffered from extensive growth of vegetation over recent years despite annual cutting back by club members each autumn. The pond has also suffered from leakages and there were doubts whether it could be used for curling even if the weather turned cold. The owners of Drumore Pond started work on improvements in December 2009. An excavator was used to clear vegetation from part of the pond, a liner was installed over part of the pond including the main bank, and access was improved by installing a new gate and putting paving along the bank. At the same time improvements were made to the hut with new guttering and a paved area outside the door. The owners of the Pond, David and Jean Clark, were awarded honorary membership of the Club during the Meander on 2 January 2010. To see more pictures of the work follow this link. Before the work could be completed the weather turned cold and the site froze. Luckily there was just sufficient water to mark out a rink so that curling could take place on several days over the 2009-10 Christmas and New year period. Eight-ender
The Club is proud that Norman Robertson's team of himself, Ian Bowie, Rita Harris and Phillip Pain achieved an eight-ender in their match on 8 December. It is probably the first at The Peak and the first for many years in the Club. Commiserations go to Archie Banks as skip of the opposing team. Province MedalThe Club are delighted announce that we won the Province Medal for the first time in many years. The teams of Mike Jackson, Donnie MacDonald, Stan Moore and George Harris and Marshall Falconer, Norman Robertson, Fiona Glass and Phillip Pain won 13 ends. West Stirlng Ladies were second on 10 ends. More details should be available on the Province website in due course. New membersWe are delighted to welcome two new playing members for the 2009/10 season. Douglas Graham and Dennis Pattenden are both returning to curling after many years away. Many of the members will already know Dennis, who lives in Killearn, and some of us remember Douglas, who has returned to live in Bearsden after spells in Cairo, Luton and Worcester. Douglas's wife Fiona has also joined as a non-playing member. Texas ScrambleThe Texas Scramble took place on 4 September 2009 at Buchanan Castle Golf Club. The golf was well supported with several ladies playing for the first time and fine weather for a change. The golf was followed by an excellent meal in the dining room and a general knowledge quiz. The wining golf team was Maurice Rennie, Ian Bowie, Steve Holden and Jean Anderson. Tied for second were the teams of Fiona Glass, John Bowie, Donnie MacDonald (as Captain of the Golf club he should certainly know the course!) and Pauline Holden; and Marshall Falconer (as Greens Convenor of the Golf Club, he should know the course even better!), Gail Pain, Eddie Redmond and Jim Meikle. The quiz was won by Douglas Graham, Dorothy Pattenden, Fiona Graham and Margaret Falconer with 18 points out of 20. We had to give our new members a chance! Summer BarbecueIan and Agnes Bowie were kind enough to host a barbecue on 4 July. Although the weather had turned showery by then, it remained dry when it mattered and a most enjoyable afternoon was had by all. AGM 2009The 163rd AGM was held on Thursday 16 April 2009 at the Reception Suite of Glengoyne Distillery. Drinks were served from 7.30 p.m. after which the meeting and prizegiving took place, followed by tea, coffee and shortbread. Mike Jackson succeeded Fiona Glass as President on the completion of her term of office and George Harris became the Vice President. Jim Paterson has replaced Jim Meikle as Social Secretary and Norman Robertson has returned to the committee as Evening League convenor. Ian Bowie has joined the Committee as an additional member. The results of the main competitions can be found at Archive.
